A Deep Dive into a Day in the Life of a Homeschool Family with Teens

As the sun rises gently through the curtains, my day begins later than usual, around 7:45 AM. After recovering from a chest infection, I’m allowing myself a slower morning than the typical 6:30 AM start, which usually involves an early jog or a CrossFit session. Instead, I take this time for prayer, jotting down thoughts, and enjoying a cup of tea with my husband while the teens remain in their slumber. The beauty of homeschooling is the flexibility to adjust our schedule according to their adolescent need for sleep.

Morning Learning Session

By 9 AM, both of my teenagers—Harry and Rosie—are up and ready after a quick breakfast and shower. We dive into Harry’s economics studies as he gears up for his upcoming GCSE exams. This week, he’s focused on globalization and multinational corporations, starting with a case study from Kenya. Together, we discuss prominent examples like Unilever, drawing real-life connections to current events, particularly my husband’s recent business endeavors in France.

Harry then works independently on summarizing the next section, while Rosie is busy with her English exercises. She’s preparing for dual exams in Literature and Language this summer. Today, we focus on a practice Language exam, going through the passages together and discussing her responses without the pressure of a ticking clock.

As the clock strikes 10:30 AM, I shift my attention to lunch prep, which today is a challenge. My initial plan of a beef stew goes awry since the meat is frozen, leaving me to hastily opt for a quicker chicken stir fry. Multitasking becomes my survival tactic as I juggle cooking while assisting the kids with their studies, trying to find economics answers on my phone amidst the kitchen chaos.

Midday Break: Lunch and Connection

By 12:15 PM, we gather for lunch—this momentary calm is a highlight of our day. We chat about various topics, sharing interesting facts like the legal stipulation in Switzerland that prohibits owning just one guinea pig. Afterward, we take advantage of the pleasant spring weather with a walk around the village, discussing our upcoming trip to India and its historical context, including the 1947 Partition that resulted in immense migration.

Learning through travel is fundamental in our homeschool, enhancing our understanding of history and culture before we explore new places.

Afternoon Academic Pursuits

Returning home, Harry tackles his math work on circle theorems, managing most of it independently. Between his studies, he takes breaks to work on an old ride-on-lawn mower, attempting repairs with no success. Meanwhile, Rosie channels her writing abilities into a letter for our local Member of Parliament regarding a concerning schools bill that threatens home education freedoms in the UK.

This legislation could impose restrictions on children with special educational needs, requiring special permissions that could unfairly limit their access to homeschooling. Rosie is dedicating her afternoon to articulate her thoughts on how home education has benefited her. It’s crucial for her to express not only her experience but also the potential negative effects of the proposed changes on others.

By 4:30 PM, their academic day concludes, and both have invested a substantial amount of effort into their individual tasks.

Evening Activities and Passion Projects

Following their studies, Harry heads to a cricket session scheduled from 5 PM to 8 PM. On the way, we listen to the educational podcast, No Such Thing as A Fish. Our homeschooling approach is driven by passions—Harry aspires to play cricket professionally and has recently signed with the Kent Cricket Club, marking an important step in his journey.

Back at home, Rosie pursues her own passion for acting by joining a Zoom call with the writer of a play she’s rehearsing, No Regrets. The interaction inspires her and offers insights into the world of theater.

Evening Reflections and Family Time

Later, Rosie has a quick dinner before connecting with her best friend for games and poetry sessions. As the boys return from cricket, Harry finishes his evening routine and indulges in painting his Lord of the Rings figures, reflecting his current interests.

By 9:30 PM, the day winds down, and we gather for reading in our rooms, the perfect way to transition into night. These busy homeschool days, filled with learning and passion, are something I cherish, especially as I navigate the changes ahead, including the possibility of Rosie attending school in the fall.

This journey of homeschooling has shaped our lives in remarkable ways, and I’m committed to savoring each moment as we move forward.

Reflecting on how much has changed since we started this path, I find comfort in the memories we’ve created together.
