With the ups and downs of recent years, my goal has shifted toward discovering a new balance in our homeschooling journey. From personal losses to an unconventional living situation, the pandemic has undoubtedly altered our family dynamic. But here’s a snapshot of what a typical Tuesday looks like for us:

Morning Routine

The joy of not having to rush into a structured schedule is liberating. As I wake up, the gentle realization that today is a no-pressure Tuesday brings me immense satisfaction. In a stage where my older children can manage their learning independently and my younger ones are explorative, I find peace in this transitional window.

As the morning unfolds around 8 AM, I step into the kitchen to see my 15-year-old, Heidi, preparing breakfast. Justice, aged 6, along with 4-year-old Ben, are engrossed in their own imaginative scenarios with toys scattered across the floor, while my husband Jeff enjoys a quiet moment with his book. It's one of those rare mornings, enhanced by the warmth of a crackling wood stove and a fleeting moment of tranquility.

Despite a recent illness that lingered in our household, the pleasant sounds of family activity remind me of what truly matters. But my usual comfort, coffee, eludes me today as my taste buds recover. I check the time and remember, oh yes, Dutch, my 18-year-old, has a schedule to keep.

“Is Dutch up??”

With time slipping away, I make my way up to nudge him awake. His groggy state is a reminder of our recent bout of Norovirus. After a brief moment of panic, we scramble to ensure he gets breakfast and a packed lunch. Luckily, he makes it out the door with only a minor delay.

High School Dynamics

Dutch is now navigating his final stretch of high school classes through the local community college, a blend of online courses, in-person homeschool programs, and independent study. We're particularly proud of him being named Valedictorian for the upcoming graduation. This hybrid approach has been beneficial for his education, striking a balance between guided and self-directed learning.

Heidi, now approaching 16, attends Baker Early College, where she simultaneously works toward her high school diploma and associate degree. Her classes coincide well with Dutch’s schedule, allowing for shared commutes and opportunities for family bonding during rides to campus. The school also offers social engagements, enriching her high school experience.

Typically, Jeff takes the younger children to visit a close elderly couple for some quality time. Today, however, we've decided to postpone their visit for safety reasons. Jeff heads off to work, while the younger boys and I start the day afresh.

A Day in the Life

Our days right now revel in the freedom of flexibility rather than rigidity. Chores, walks, cooking, and playtime fill our hours. We rely on our IEW curriculum, playing games, and indulging in our shared love for reading. I enjoy moments where Justice chips in with his emerging literacy skills as he navigates simple texts.

Ben, always eager to join, repeats whatever words emerge, determined not to be sidelined. Justice engages eagerly in our “Letter Lessons,” adding layers to his comprehension and enjoyment of stories.

As the afternoon rolls in and our teenagers return, Dutch quickly shifts gears for wrestling practice while Heidi immerses herself in homework and theater rehearsals. The little boys and I tidy up before allowing them some screen time with short videos while I prepare dinner.

Evening Engagements

Despite a relaxed day, our evenings are a flurry of activities. Tuesdays find Heidi and me attending Bible Study, followed by her late-night ballet class. Coming home around 11 PM underscores my earlier decision to enjoy a slow morning.

Thanks for joining me on this journey through our day. If you have insights or inquiries about balancing big kids and little ones in homeschooling, I welcome your thoughts!
